November 3rd 2011

Nature Walk – during October we learned all about Autumn.  We talked about animals that hibernate, why the leaves change clolour, what happens to the weather and all about Autumn fruits.  The children brought in lots of leaves, conkers, acorns, pinecones and sycamore seeds.  We read lots of Autumn stories, had an Autumn sensory box, did leaf rubbings and went on a Nature Walk.

Hallowe’en

Here are some pictures of us dressed up for Hallowe’en and making our witches.  We read lots of spooky stories, made trick or treat bags, learned a poem about a teeny tiny ghost and played some traditional Hallowe’n games.

Some of the sides of the photos got cut off by the scoilnet software – apologies

We get a lovely tray of fruit every Friday.  It is so yummy.  A big thank you to the parents who come in and chop it up for us.  Remember they are always looking for volunteers.

Sorting and sets

This week we were looking at set in maths.  We did lots and lots of sorting and making sets of things that belong together.

We also got a new writing activity – blackboards!

Learning through play

We are learning so much in our Aistear sessions – we have had volcanoes in the sand area, a party in the pizza parlour, a disco in Letterland, and a traffic jam in the construction area.

Aistear

Our Learning through play sessions are going well, we really look forward to them every day.  As it is October we changed all our areas.  Our Role Play Area is now a Pizza Parlour.  We made signs and menus and we have a delivery service !  Our Construction area is now taken over with mini versions of us!  Our Small World Area has been turned in Letterland.  Our Creative Area is a painting station where we have been making Elmer and Rainbow fish (our stories for the last two weeks).  And the Sand Area has been turned into Dinosaur world.  We are reading lots of stories about Dinosaurs – yesterday we read Dinosaurs Love Underpants.  It was very funny

Music Time

This week we had a look at the percussion instruments.  We had great fun playing along to our favourite Nursery Rhymes using tambourines, guiros, maracas, castanets, shakers, triangles, wood blocks, sleigh bells and claves.  We learned that a conductor tell the musicians when to start and stop.

Fun Friday

Friday was a very exciting day.  First of all we had no electricity so we had to be very inventive with our lessons.  After break we went to the Library and had our pictures taken by a photographer.  Then we went to the hall where all the children were to see the Sam Maguire Cup.  Everybody was very excited and we gave lots of cheers.  Well done to MrMcCauliffe for his great job as MC.

Then, as if the day wasn’t exciting enough, while we were having our fruit Mrs Manton came in to tell us we were the Star Class this week.  We got the most stars for lining up in the yard.  Mrs Manton brought us a trophy and on Monday we will get some lollipops.
